Inconel 718 — Machining & Properties
Typical properties, what Inconel 718 is like on a machine tool, what it gets used for, and the tolerance and finishes we hold on it — from a shop that actually machines it, not a datasheet aggregator. Every figure here drives our own calculators.
Machining Inconel 718
Machinability is rated very difficult — among the hardest materials to machine commercially — expect premium tooling, slow parameters and meaningful cost and lead-time implications. Nickel superalloys work-harden rapidly and generate extreme cutting temperatures. Premium carbide tooling, conservative parameters and flood coolant are mandatory — expect additional cost and lead time relative to standard alloys.
Our standard achievable tolerance on Inconel 718 is ±0.020mm under normal conditions, with tighter tolerances on critical features agreed at quotation. Standard finishes: As machined, superfinish, shot peen. Full material traceability with MTR and CoC documentation on every order.
Typical applications
Gas turbine components, subsea manifolds, nuclear reactor hardware.

Inconel 718 — FAQ
What is the density of Inconel 718?
8.19 g/cm³ (typical). That is 8190 kg/m³ — our metal weight calculator uses exactly this figure for Inconel 718.
What is the tensile strength of Inconel 718?
Typically 1375 MPa. Treat it as a typical value, not a specification — the Material Test Report supplied with your order states the actual certified figures for the batch.
Is Inconel 718 easy to machine?
Its machinability is rated very difficult — among the hardest materials to machine commercially — expect premium tooling, slow parameters and meaningful cost and lead-time implications.
What is Inconel 718 used for?
Typical applications: Gas turbine components, subsea manifolds, nuclear reactor hardware.
What tolerance can be held when machining Inconel 718?
Our standard achievable tolerance on Inconel 718 is ±0.020mm under normal conditions (ISO 2768-f general tolerancing). Tighter tolerances on critical features can be agreed at quotation for specific geometries.
Can Dalloway machine Inconel 718?
Yes — we machine Inconel 718 in-house on 3, 4 and 5-axis milling and CNC turning, from single prototypes to production, with MTR and CoC documentation standard. Typical finishes: As machined, superfinish, shot peen.
