Measuring threads over wires, and why it works
You cannot micrometer a pitch diameter directly — it lives halfway down the flanks where nothing parallel exists to measure. Three calibrated wires fix that: two in adjacent grooves one side, one opposite, and the micrometer reads over them. For 60° metric threads the geometry collapses to one line: M = d₂ + 3W − 0.86603P. Measure M, know your wire, and the actual pitch diameter falls out — which is the reverse mode of this tool, and the direction used at the lathe.
The best wire size (0.57735 × pitch) is the wire that touches exactly at the pitch line, which makes the measurement insensitive to small flank-angle errors. Any wire that touches the flanks rather than bottoming in the root or riding the crest will work — the formula corrects for it — but the further from best size, the more a form error contaminates the answer. Wire sets are cheap; guessing is not.
One number worth internalising: for a 60° thread, pitch diameter error transfers to measurement roughly one-to-one, but a thread cut 0.01 mm deep on radius moves d₂ by 0.02 on diameter — and M moves with it. When chasing a 6g class band a few hundredths wide, the three-wire measurement is the difference between knowing and hoping. How do you measure a thread with three wires?
Place two wires in adjacent thread grooves on one side and one wire opposite, then measure over them with a micrometer. For 60° metric threads, M = d₂ + 3W − 0.86603P — so the pitch diameter d₂ = M − 3W + 0.86603P.
What is the best wire size for thread measurement?
0.57735 × pitch — the wire that contacts the flanks exactly at the pitch line, making the measurement least sensitive to flank angle error. For an M8×1.25 thread the best wire is 0.722 mm.
What is the pitch diameter of a metric thread?
d₂ = d − 0.64952 × P. For M8×1.25 that is 8 − 0.812 = 7.188 mm nominal. External threads in class 6g sit slightly below this by their fundamental deviation.
What reading should I get over wires for M8?
With best wire (0.722 mm): M = 7.188 + 2.165 − 1.083 ≈ 8.270 mm at nominal pitch diameter. A lower reading means the thread is cut deeper (smaller d₂).
Does this work for trapezoidal or Whitworth threads?
Not with these constants — the 3W and 0.86603P terms are specific to the 60° form. Trapezoidal (30°) and Whitworth (55°) threads use different wire formulas.
